Julia Baird: "Our mum loved John"

The sister of murdered Beatle John Lennon has hit back a claims that he was a "Nowhere Boy" - abandoned by his mother when he was a toddler.

John's half-sister, Julia Baird denied that the rock legend had been deprived of his mother's love and dismissed the suggestions as "lies."

And she opened her family album of photos to produce unseen photographs to prove that John and his mother were in regular contact.

Julia raged at the allegations made on connection with "Nowhere Boy" a movie about Lennon's childhood which is to be filmed early next year.

The film directed by artist Sam Taylor-Wood shows Lennon as a "lonely teenager abandoned by his mother" being snubbed by his mother until the age of 15.

It is widely known that Lennon was brought up by his aunt Mimi Smith when his mother was deserted by his father and could no longer cope with raising him.

It is thought his mother's absence throughout his childhood and her early death inspired the Beatles ballad Julia and the later solo recording, Mother.

But speaking at the opening of a new exhibition about Lennon in Liverpool Julia Baird insisted John always had contact with his mother and was "utterly devoted to her."

Julia opened a new exhibition at the Beatles museum named "The Many Faces of John Lennon", which features famous photos her brother.

The stunning images include pictures of the band as they played on Hamburg's notorious music scene in the early 60's.

Julia said: "John is not around to defend himself from scurrilous stories that are being written but I am John's sister and I can speak for him.

"I have read stories suggesting my mother abandoned John. I have read lies saying that he did not see my mother from the age of two to 15.

"But it is absolutely not true. I have many photographs of John with my mother while he was growing up and the camera doesn't lie.

"Everybody knows the story of how John came to live with Mimi but he was still very much in contact with mum.

"John's frequent visits to our mother gave him liveness, freedom and the love that he sought which amounted to his musical talent.

"My mother was a musical genius, she played the piano, the banjo, the ukulele and the accordinan.

"She taught John all these things. I was there while she was teaching him and he hung on every word she said.

"John was devastated when our mother died, he was utterly devoted to her.

"She was a dedicated mother and never abandoned him or gave him away.

"She instilled in him a deep love and spiritual strength. "
